Tim,
Your best bet is to have an outside antenna as high as you
can possibly get it. The higher it goes the more you increase the
range of reception especially for milair 225-400 MHz comms.
For milair I suggest a discone as their wide reception range
is the best antenna to cover this band. I have been using a
Diamond D-130J discone for 16 years now and it has never failed me.
You won't hear much on the stock antenna unless its passing near your house.
Another reason you aren't hearing anything is the holidays!
The local units especially here in the interior of the country
do not operate during holidays, they get time off from work just like
the rest of us.
Activity in the MOAs are basically from the local National Guard units.
So its whenever they are operating is when you mostly hear activity
around here.
If you become a regular monitor of military air communications
unless you live few close to a military installation,
you will have to exercise a lot of patience.
