With a computer you could use Trunker or other programs to monitor
 a trunked radio system even without a trunktracker scanner.  It
works exactly like a trunktracker scanner but it allows you to see
the complete system layout instead of simplifying everything into
a talkgroup number.  Trunker interfaces to a modified scanner
using a "data slicer" but other software can use a sound card.

Trunker lets you monitor the entire trunked system all at once. 
It will discover all the trunking system parameters while
monitoring.  Frequencies, talkgroups, patches, radios and almost
everything else.

With any scanner:  You can manually assign radios, talkgroups and
patches with title tags and make them beep or flash.  After doing
that you can plainly see who's radio is talking on which
talkgroups and on some systems who's listening to them.  You can
see who's talking to who using their icall function.  You can see
all the talkgroups that belong to a patch or broadcast.  And on
some systems who's listening to that patch or broadcast.  When a
new talkgroup shows up you can see exactly who's radios are
talking on it.  You don't have to guess or even listen to know who
is talking on it.

With a computer-controlled scanner: You can trunktrack icalls,
patches and talkgroups.  You can prioritize your trunktracking
based on radio, talkgroup, or patch ID.  You can restrict your
trunktracking to a radio, talkgroup or patch.

With two scanners you can do both at the same time.  That means
you can preemptively trunktrack the system.  If a higher priority
talkgroup becomes active the radio instantly switches to it. 
Unlike a Uniden trunktracker that strands you on a talkgroup until
everyone stops talking.
