To return for a moment to a question asked yesterday...
UHF = Ultra High Frequency; the UHF band is generally considered to be in
the 225 to 800 Mhz range.
(don't nitpick, there are many different interpretations of this band).
There are of course many sub-groups
in this band, e.g. the aircraft comm band is 225-400 Mhz, the UHF 2-way
commercial band is
450-470-something, etc.
VHF = Very High Frequency; The VHF band is generally considered to be
(roughly) 54-224 Mhz, though
opinions differ. This band is, of course, where most police and fire
agencies operate, along with many other users, such as railroads, aircraft,
etc.
HF = High Frequency; The HF band is generally considered to 30-54 Mhz;
Below HF is the "short wave" bands, and then there is Low Frequency, Very
Low Frequency, and ELF, which is the Extremely Low Frequency range that the
Navy uses to communicate with submarines.
Of course 800-1000Mhz is the cell-phone and mobile phone bands, and above
1000Mhz is considered to be the radar and microwave bands.
Thats a brief, rudimentary explanation of the radio frequency spectrum.
