I have a friend who works at MECA in an administrative capacity. He tells me
that they are already talking to manufacturers and formulating specs for a
new digital system. He thinks that they are 2 to 3 years away from going
online with it.
I know nothing of digital technology, but he told me that the radio
manufacturers are telling MECA that there are no current scanners capable of
picking up the signal and none coming in the foreseeable future. He tried to
explain it to me- something about MECA "owning" the digital packets of
information and having complete control over who has the technology needed
to receive the packets. As I said, it's all way over my head.
