not true! Those radios cannot connect to the internet by themselves.
The sentinel software downloads the current RRDB (per Scott's email), which is usually updated on Mondays and then you can upload it to the radio.
This does not need to be done weekly, only when something you are monitoring is changed on RR. I do mine about every 4-6 weeks as a habit.
You can also use sentinel to create "favorites" lists to load into the radio, and fine tune them to listen or remove individual channels/TGs that you want instead of taking time to lock out things while listening. 
Play with it while waiting for the radio.
