[Scan-DC] The Pentagon Might Finally Do Something About Helicopter Noise Around DC

Wilson,

Last I knew there aren’t any aircraft being used, routinely, to report traffic in the DC market and there haven’t been any for several years. And I think the last chopper was WMAL’s Capt Dan, back in the 1970s.

There are, of course, some choppers used by some of the TV stations to cover specific news stories. They need to fly at an altitude that will provide the shots they need while avoiding approach and departure paths to various airports.

I think a lot of the choppers you may be hearing are law enforcement, being used on patrol or to cover movements of POTUS and other VIPs. They’re also used, regularly for rescues from, and along, the Potomac. These seem to be happening several times a week this summer.
