'Honor Flight' full of veterans struck by lightning, lands safely
David Oliver, USA TODAY Published 12:57 p.m. ET May 2, 2019

A Sun Country Airlines flight, carrying mostly veterans, landed safely after being struck by lightning while traveling from Peoria, Illinois, to Washington, D.C. on Monday.

The flight was courtesy of the "Honor Flight Network," a non-profit organization that aims to fly veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans.

The plane landed safely at 9:27 a.m. ... "After landing, maintenance observed evidence of a lightning strike," Kirsten Wenker, a Sun Country spokesperson, told USA TODAY. "The aircraft was inspected and signed off by Boeing, and operated the return flight as planned later that night."

There were 181 people on board, most of whom were veterans.

Think charter flights; Sun Country has operated significant numbers of Honor Flights bringing our veterans to DC, as an example.
