Mason Police District – Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau continue to
investigate after a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at INOVA
Fairfax Hospital.  Officers responded at 8:47 <https://0.0.0.1/> last night
to 3300 Gallows Road <https://0.0.0.2/> where a patient on the 4th floor of
the hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute was reported to have a gun.
Prior to officers’ arrival, the patient, 64-year-old Thomas Wimmer, of
Ashburn, shot himself at-least once in the upper body.  Officers arrived
on-scene a short time later and found Wimmer alone in his hospital room.
He was initially responsive but non-compliant to officer commands and
refused to surrender his firearm.  Approximately an hour later, officers
were able to safely enter Wimmer’s room and immediately rendered medical
aid.  Wimmer was taken to the hospital’s trauma center where he died a
short time later.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be
conducting an autopsy to confirm cause of death.  No other injuries were
reported as a result of this incident.
