[Scan-DC] Curious flights in FlightRadar24

Thanks everyone for your responses on the nature of these flights. Fascinating stuff. The article that Joe sent is really interesting (and even mentions these flights departing from Newport News, just like the ones seen on FR24). Wouldn't it be cool to have a job flying Learjets for military practice (except when you get shot at like the one in the article)?

Hope everyone is having a Happy New Year!

W4JE

Here is an interesting related article:

generally for general aviation comms. The aircraft frequently was heard
and appeared to be simulating an unauthorized aircraft entering the VA
CAPES ADIZ area along the VA/NC area.

The four aircraft mentioned may have been circling in a staging area
awaiting further instructions from the appropriate military base site,
military aircraft, Navy ship, etc. possibly to test something. My guess
was they were simulating enemy aircraft entering the VA CAPES ADIZ
testing some enhanced form of radar detection equipment being used.

Unfortunately, this listserv won't let me post images, but multiple (up to four) Learjets are leaving Williamsburg/Newport News airport (civilian airport), no tail numbers or call signs, going ~60 miles offshore to the east, and doing circles. He saw them a couple of days ago (two jets at the same time), and seeing them again today. For anyone interested, you can go to FR now. There are a couple marked "LJ35" east of the Va/NC border, at 27,000 ft, doing donuts.
