[Scan-DC] DCA tower is interesting listening

Awesome!

I couldn't resist going over to Gravelly Point this morning to shoot some video. I captured four departures and one (attempted) landing before the cold and wind caught up with me. The go-around is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9FKvJVjG4E. Believe it or not, the camera _was_ on a tripod!

I've been listening to the tower for most of the day. The typical pattern is an attempt to land on Runway 1, followed by a go-around due to wind shear, then circling around to land on 33. I've only heard one go-around on 33. Some of the attempts on 1 succeed, and the pilots are given accolades by the controllers. Hard to say whether they are good pilots or just reckless.

Andy

Dulles had a report of a CRJ-200 on descent (according to the pilot report) "turbulence moderate to severe. very bumpy on descent. pretty much every one on the plane threw up. Pilots were on the verge of throwing up." That was around 9. I saw the PIREP second hand via twitter, so take it fwiw.

out of BWI a pilot reported it was smooth above 5,000 feet. When the controller asked if it was bumpy below that altitude, he replied with an emphatic "OH YEAH!"

earlier this morning, around 8 or so, Jetblue 144 from Charlotte SC to DCA shot one or two missed approaches at National, diverted to BWI and shot another missed approached, then finally landed. Controller and pilot sounded unconcerned but definitely relieved. The plane then did a 18 minute hop from BWI to DCA around 10:15. Don't know whether there were passengers on board or not.

Several go-arounds due to wind shear and missed approaches (on Runway 1 no less!). Several departing planes hanging out on taxi ways waiting for wind speed/direction combination to be within acceptable limits.
