I recently found this mailing list. I used to be an avid scanner listener in the Baltimore area but kind of lost interest when digital and trunking became a thing. Some of the more off beat stuff would keep me interested, things like mil air, weather satellites, etc, but even that slowly faded away.

I picked up a cheap scanner for AM airband when I worked near Manassas airport but now I work in DC. Yesterday the DC police department were responding to something big, they weren't just lights a d sirens speeding, they were really pushing their cars and SUVs to the limit. I thought, what's going on? Am I safe? How can I find out? I never did find out what was going on but it did remind me of what I'd do in the old days, turn on the scanner and listen.

Then, a little research I learned that there isn't much to hear from the DC Police Department as they are known to encrypt even the most routine communications. What do folks listen to in DC, what is interesting? What can keep you informed? Where do you go to find frequencies?

Joe
