      MEDIA ADVISORY: US Coast Guard cutter Eagle in Old Town Alexandria, Va., first time in Washington, D.C., area in 11 years

       



      WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is scheduled to sail up the Potomac River and arrive in Old Town Alexandria, Va., the morning of Sept. 4 as part of its summer 2017 deployment. It is the first time in 11 years that the tall ship has been in the Washington, D.C., area.

      The Eagle is the only active tall ship in the U.S. military services and is used to train students at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. The Eagle's summer 2017 deployment spans five months and 14 ports, including multiple ports along the Eastern Seaboard, Canada and Bermuda.       Media availability will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4, and there will be an opportunity for media to be on board the Eagle while it is moored at the pier before the public tours begin that day. Capt. Matthew Meilstrup, commanding officer of the Eagle, will be the main speaker at the availability event. 

      Prior to the formal media availability event, the Eagle will transit from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge at approximately 8 a.m. that day and moor at the pier in Alexandria at approximately 8:30 a.m. Media are permitted to photograph and film the Eagle's transit and approach to the pier but may not ride along on the vessel.

      What: Arrival of the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, media availability event.

      When: Monday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m. to noon. 

      Where: Point Lumley Park, 1 Duke Street, Alexandria, Va., near Union Street. 

      Who: Capt. Matthew Meilstrup, commanding officer of the Eagle.

      TRAFFIC NOTE: The Woodrow Wilson Bridge is scheduled to be open Monday, Sept. 4, at approximately 8 a.m. as Eagle transits up the Potomac River and Friday, Sept. 8, at approximately 4:40 a.m. to allow Eagle to sail through as it leaves Alexandria.
