DMR = Digital Mobile Radio, based on Motorola's TRBO.Used in business systems and the amateur radio digitalvoice mode that's winning out over D-STAR and System Fusion.
This system is like 2 repeaters in one. Two users can talk
at the same time on one repeater. Based on 2 slot TDMA and
sounds just like the MD FiRST system.
An MD-380 can be had for $100 new.

So I guess I'll be the one to ask the dumb question. What's a DMR and
why would I want to upgrade mine?

They asked me if it was under warranty, and when I said 'no, they told me something about not having the parts to do the repairs, and even if they did, the parts wouldn't be compatible or something like that. So, I think I have crossed Whistler off of my list for any future purchases.
