His emergency HT typically should additionally have 121.500 mhz.,
243.000 mhz. and probably the 400-406 mhz. satellite frequency that the
GOES weather satellites addtional emergency comm "package" monitors and
relays to ground monitoring stations worldwide. You remember 121.5000
mhz. and 243.000 mhz. They were the ones the FAA facilities stopped
monitoring some years ago because they were no longer as relevant as the
satellite detection and location capabilities were more dependable and
quicker. I'm sure the military kept these two frequencies in the
pilot's emergency HT for area/local ground/air comms. My guess is the
downed pilot was talking to another area search aircraft on 243.000 mhz.
