I have a Baofeng UX-82X - it covers 2M and 220Mhz. For $50, it's pretty
much the only economical way to get on 220 FM with 5W at the
moment. Another few bucks for programming software and you are set. No,
you can't reprogram in the field, but you can go to VFO mode. And, since I
rarely travel outside 2 geographical areas in the US for more than a few
weeks at a time, I have those areas programmed in the software on my laptop
and just switch them out when I do travel. I once had a Kenwood TH-F6A
<http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-TH-F6A-Handheld-Amateur-Transceiver/dp/B00LV4PWF2>,
but it was too expensive and I didn't care for it. If you are looking to
listen to SW bands on any of the handhelds, don't count on it. They are
pretty miserable without a long wire or something other than a whip.
The Anytones do look good if you are not interested in 220 and I might get
the Terminator or the Obliterator when they come out for sale, depending on
the price.
