Sky-watchers in Maryland and elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic might see glowing clouds from a NASA rocket launch in Wallops Island, Va., Wednesday night. ... The launch, which was postponed a day due to weather, will be a "test drive" for a new motor, launch vehicle and other technologies being developed for space missions, NASA said.
The rocket won't reach orbit, but it will create visible blue, green and red clouds during sub-payload ejection tests shortly after launch, between 7 and 9 p.m., according to NASA.
Other clouds in the sky could affect how well the rocket can be seen. The National Weather Service forecasts a partly cloudy night in the Baltimore area with a low of about 60 degrees.
Weather permitting, NASA expects the glow of the rocket to be visible from as far north as Long Island, N.Y., as far south as Morehead City, N.C., and as far west as Charlottesville, Va. — and everywhere in between.
