Top speed of a Bensen B-8 Gyrocopter is about 60 MPH. Can the aerostat
radar detect and track something that low and slow, and determine it
is a flying object, and not a car on a highway? You can see the
balloon from Anne Arundel county (at least that's what I think it is)
at times. Video I saw today showed him flying down the center of the
Mall, lower than the top of the Washington Monument.
I think the planners of the radar were thinking of something larger,
and faster. No one thought of something this small. Now they're going
to have to post some sort of small anti-aircraft emplacements to shoot
another attempt out of the sky.
And after a small plane was crashed into the White House in 1994,
you'd think they were looking for this.
