Bob:
While I was programming/playing with the 436HP I was using a multiband antenna designed for a car, which works very well from on top of the bookcase in my office!
The little I did use the rubber duckie, it seemed to work just fine for me.

Thanks again Joel,
I do have the easy read manual but must have overlooked the squelch
resume.
The manual(s) leave out info on quick keys i.e. how they are used in
Profile and for each FL, but I figured that out. 396 manual was
explicit.
The rubber duck is a handheld dummy load. I am using a cheap
telescoping ant from junk box with much improved results.
I saw another comment about it some where.
What is your experience?
Thanks, Bob

No problem. Did you check out www.marksscanners.com for the easier to read manual for the 436HP? I just programmed one for a friend, and will need to get it back to re-do the favorites, systems and channels quick keys. I set it up using the QK that his 396T uses but the 436 has so many more features that I will reprogram his favorites to make it easier for him to use.
