1. As of now I recommend using the Uniden 536. GRE/Whistler scanners
will drive you nuts if the target signal is encrypted as GRE/Whistler
scanners do NOT mute the audio. Uniden models do mute encrypted audio.
The Uniden 536 is more RF input sensitive than the Uniden XT models. The
decoded P25 audio is good quality and decodes P25 Phase 1 and 2.
2. Presently I am importing my Uniden 996XT files to Butel's ARC536PRO
and using the KISS method creating 100 Favorite's Lists which will
include most of the monitorable radio systems in VA (95 counties/35
Independent cities, STARS, federal, etc.). I finished FL-48 yesterday
and have 51 to go. Favorite Lists can be selected "on the fly" by
entering the desired FL number to select to monitor or if previously
selected to monitor deselect to stop monitoring. So far so good. It is
working as planned and sounds good. Interfaced with a GPS receiver with
all the systems selected to monitor it is hands free monitoring when mobile.
3. There probably will come a time when some radio system you want to
monitor has converted to a DMR, i.e., MOTOTRBO. NXDN/NEXEDGE baseline.
Currently there are no DMR scanners. DMR users in the public safety,
local govt, medical and private sectors are increasing monthly. A DMR
receive system is not difficult to configure but it does take time and
money and it will not be a scanner but one selected DMR frequency to
monitor. I have configured 3 DMR systems so far and all work great.
There is no audio background noise on a DMR received signal just
silence until someone speaks. The audio quality to me is comparable to
commercial WBFM radio. Digital reception is unforgiving regarding
peaking of the target frequency. I recommend using an earlier vintage
ICOM R7000 analog receiver modified for unfiltered audio or an analog
scanner which supports offset frequency tuning. R7000s have been
available on EBAY and a few ham radio websites. A digital scanner can be
used if it has an unfiltered audio output chassis connection. A 10-15K
resistor is inserted in output audio cable connected to the computer's
Line In, not Mic, audio connection. An external audio sound system is
required. DSDPLUS , a Windows level free software, is used. DMR Decode,
also free, can also be run and will id the talkgroup of the user and
talkgroup log histories are supported in csv format. Installation help
is available on the Radio Reference website in the Digital Software forum.
