Once you leave DC for the south, set your scanner on 161.550 MHz and leave it there. All you need for the DC to Fredericksburg stretch is a single channel crystal receiver. You can use one of those shoebox-sized multiband radios from the '60s and '70s to listen to trains on the old RF&P.
