Watched the whole thing from my balcony at 132 St.
Began around 1630..when I heard 3 blasts from a guard's whistle (an alert
signal) and saw them running up the beach.
NOT FOR USE ON-AIR, because it comes from scanner traffic....an 18 year old
non-swimmer was pulled out by a rip current at 137 1/2 Street. The victim
was recovered about 35-40 minutes later near 139 St. Taken by land, CPR in
progress, to Atlantic General.
At one time there were half a dozen, or so, guards in the water along with
some specialized rescue swimmers. Trooper 4 assisted in the search along
with 1 or 2 USCG vessels. The OC fireboat was dispatched but I don't know
if it ever made it to the scene. (The advertising sign boat, which happened
to be there, also assisted with the search).
