Sheriff's deputies Saturday chased down two men wanted on outstanding warrants and found one had a police scanner app on his cell phone that was monitoring their conversations.

At 5:10 p.m., Van Buren County sheriff's deputies were closing in on a home in the 36000 block of Sixth Avenue in Bloomingdale Township, where two fugitives were thought to be, when they saw the men run out the back door and into a field, a news release said.

Deputies chased down and captured the pair, identified as Matthew Durian, 26, and Jason Smith, 24, both of Gobles.

"Deputies found that Jason Smith's cell phone was actively running an app as a police scanner, where deputies heard their own radio traffic coming from his phone during the arrest," the news release said.

Smith was being held in the Van Buren County Jail on bench warrants for failure to appear in court on traffic violations and on a charge of possession of meth.

Durian was jailed on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a weapons charge, and on charges of resisting arrest, the news release said.
