LOL - you and me both, and probably lots of other people too.
OK, re the old system at walter reed, at one time there were two firehouses... one at the old hospital in DC and one at the annex in Silver Spring... it was the same operation, not sure what the staffing and apparatus was, but you used to hear them call Mtgy and say they were going to the DC location and stuff like that. I'm not sure of the status of the DC property, but pretty sure it's mostly vacant, if not completely. I also don't know the status or future of the Silver Spring property with the move of the hospital to Bethesda... there is a PX & commissary there in Silver Spring that's pretty heavily used, I think mostly by a lot of retired military personnel who live in that area. Not sure what other facilities are on that property but a lot of the buildings are fairly new (a lot of them are ancient... place has an interesting history, it's been a women's seminary, a "sanitarium", all kinds of stuff. I'll see if I can find some info and put
up a link later on.
I never realized that the fire stations were detatchments of organizations like NDW or whatever the Army might call them around here (actually I guess it was Military District of Washington?) so wouldn't dast say! Will ask some of my county firefighter friends if they know... far as I know 54 and the one at the Naval Hospital, as I'll call it for clarity, are both still in service, ie they haven't been combined.
Wouldn't even guess at any of the stuff at AAFB or any of the other federal installations around here! But I'd be interested to know what you find out... hadn't given it much thought!
Is there anything on RadioReference? (I dunno about this Joint Base business - another good question.)
