IF you have Internet access, Zello works quite well as an alternative.

PC and Droid based software. Quite a few folks use it now for Notification
Groups, in addtion to the Two-Way radio Networks.

Sprints system has been failing more and more and with Nextel being shut
down this year, o well.
Verizon never flew and not sure about the AT&T PTT yet. Can't wait for my
Sprint contract to end.

My workplace moved from Nextel [IDEN] system to Sprint's Direct Connect
[CDMA] about a year ago when Sprint refused to sell us additional phones for
our fleet. With the Sprint system we're having about a 20% connection
failure rate compared to Nextel where we had only about 5% failure - a
pretty significant downgrade in performance. Sure wish there was a better
but still affordable option for PTT communications.
