Clarification - Narrowbanding in the sub-band 470-512 MHz was put on hold in April when Congress declared that this band (the "T-band") be cleared of all mobile systems, in light of the TV band incentive auction and the nationwide public safety broadband network. Thanks to JL for reminding me. The mandate is still in place for 150-174 and 421-470 MHz.

The FCC's mandate to narrowband systems in the 150-174 and 421-512 MHz bands takes effect on Tuesday. Channel bandwidth must be no more than 12.5 kHz "or equivalent." Since the deadline has been on the books since 2004, most systems have probably already completed the transition. The mandate applies to Private Land Mobile Radio (PLMR) and Industrial/Business Radio Pool systems.
