Thanks so much for clarifying this for me. It is so hard to find information
on anything that happened "pre-internet" --at least using the internet  ;)

I remember watching from our house just north of Gaithersburg, it was
impressive.

Nope...it wasn't going back to KSC from Edwards....it was November, 1985
when Enterprise (the test shuttle that never went into space) was flown to
Dulles to be put into the Air and Space Museum there.  I was on the Beltway
near Connecticut Av when it flew over.

In my career, I've seen more than a dozen launches from 3.5 miles away at
KSC, and a handful of landings, and the Beltway flyover was just as awesome.

(Well, maybe not equal to a launch...but close to it).
