Question: What is a Smart Meter?
Answer: A digital electric meter that will replace your analog electric meter. It has two wireless radio-frequency transmitters allowing two-way communications between your home and Pepco. Pepco started the installation process in June 2011 and will continue through December 2012 until all Maryland customers have had a new meter installed.
Diana Schultz and Tom Wilson will present the facts and issues surrounding Smart Meters from their unique perspectives as an Urban Planner and Building Biologist working with electrically sensitive clients and an Electrical Engineer seasoned in the wireless telecommunications world.
Issues with Smart Meters
1. Health Effects
· Sleep problems, headaches, migraines, tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
· Skin rashes, redness, itching
· Vertigo, cognitive impairments, blood-brain barrier breaches
· Problems with children's development, compromised immune systems
2. Functionality
· Billing questions, higher monthly billing for same usage levels
· New fire hazards
3. Privacy
· Wireless transmissions of personal usage data day and night
· Reporting times of appliance usage and non-usage
· Revealing when residents are not at home
· Usage data being sold to companies for marketing purposes
4. Personal right to opt out is denied

This one-day workshop will include important information that everyone needs to know about the concerns and choices you have to reduce and prevent EMR exposures from electric fields, magnetic fields and radio frequencies. You will walk away knowing the following:
· Typical problems found in residential homes
· How to mitigate exposures in your own home so that you may support natural healthy living conditions for yourself and your family
· Some of the best meters for your needs and how to use them
The information on Smart Meters (presented on February 5th) will not be included in this workshop. Those also interested in the Smart Meter presentation should register for both events. Some of the people coming to this presentation are considering sharing the cost and use of a set of meters.
