For that price, I would think the Home Patrol 1 is a much better choice. But
that's of course my opinion.

Also, the PSR-800 is actually $50 LESS than this new RS unit, and has more
features, so it does seem to give one pause (paws?) as to how this new one
could be competitive.

FWIW, I just noticed that Radio Shack has released a new (portable) scanner,
the PRO-18, @ $499.99; it's described in the reviews as a "stripped-down
version" of the GRE PSR-800 (fewer features)... only 5 reviews so far, four
are bad - apparently the PSR-800 is a better buy for $50 more.  Will be
interesting to see if it goes on sale this week... I did see a "leaked"
black friday ad that said "all scanners on sale", but it didn't itemize...
