Being employed by a community college, I have the benefit of being able to take classes at no cost. As a result of the scanner hobby and knowing one of the Criminal Justice instructors, I took his Administration of Justice class and have also completed two others (Corrections and Forensics).
Andy is right... in my opinion, everyone should do something like this, and high school students should also be required to take an introductory criminal justice class (yeah, good luck with that one!)
(Obligatory "radio content" - rumor has it that Montgomery County Police have been getting new radios... they sound terrible! Over the last week or ten days I've noticed a marked decrease in the ability to understand many of them - both cars and dispatchers.)
Speaking of which, I believe that Montgomery College Security may have gone to Mototrbo - the other night, "normal Star Fleet channel had nothing on it but static". I'm still looking into this...
(How's that for double-hijacking a thread!?)

The AC class was one class a week, three hours per class (which often went over), for 11 weeks. A lot of fascinating stuff, including the correct procedure for handcuffing, which we practiced on our classmates. Those things are really uncomfortable. The class with the swat team was cool too. They played some chilling audio recordings of a raid that did not end well for the suspect. I followed up the class with a 6 hour ride-along with a very cool officer.
