Walter:
I have a Garmin 12XL which works fine with the 996T, 996XT and
HP-1.
Make sure in your menu settings that you match the baud rate the
same for scanner and GPS (4800 baud is a slower speed but more
accurate and you don't notice any difference in this
application). Make sure output on GPS is set for "GARMIN/GARMIN"
and NMEA183 is the map setting on the GPS. If your Garmin cable
db9 mates to the back of the 996 you do not need any intermediary
connector like the null modem/gender bender that I need when I
want to use it on the HP-1.
I don't remember if I did anything else when I first set up the
996T, but I don't think so. The 996T menu lets you select
certain GPS features to display on the radio, like Speed, ETA,
but it takes away a line of the display so I don't use them.
My GPS is mounted under the dash with hardwire power always on
and the batteries removed, and an external antenna, so I only
have to pop the cable into whichever radio I am using and it
syncs right up.
Good luck
Joel
