LINCOLN, Neb., June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Transcrypt International
(OTC Bulletin Board: TRII) today announced that its EF Johnson subsidiary has
received its initial order from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ)
for APCO Project 25 Digital Mobile radios. The initial units will primarily
be used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a number of its field
locations.
According to Michael Jalbert, Transcrypt chairman and chief executive
officer, "This is our first contract with the FBI, and it's a significant
milestone for us. It reflects our strategy to extend our success in the state
and local marketplace into a new market -- the federal government.
"We believe that there is enormous potential for EF Johnson's digital
mobile radios as the Justice Department embarks on its multimillion dollar
program to upgrade its nationwide radio system to the APCO Project 25 digital
standard," he adds.
The federal government has adopted the APCO Project 25 standard as the
digital wireless protocol for land mobile applications, and Transcrypt is one
of only four companies offering APCO 25 products. The federal government is
just beginning to make the transition from analog to digital wireless
communications systems, with the move to the APCO 25 standard expected to be
completed by 2005.
The order from DOJ's Wireless Management Office involves EF Johnson's 5300
Series Project 25 Digital Mobile radios, which are compliant with the APCO
Project 25 Standard. Additionally, these radios are backward compatible with
legacy encryption systems widely deployed in federal markets. The 5300
provides DOJ with a competitive choice for multimode operation on existing
wideband networks as well as narrowband Project 25 digital networks.
DOJ's Wireless Management Office (WMO) was created in 1998 to coordinate
the development of a common wireless network for all DOJ agencies. The WMO
was established to centralize oversight, management, financial management and
procurement for the Justice Wireless Network. The WMO has conducted pilot
studies in several major metropolitan areas to prove the viability of a shared
DOJ system. The Justice Wireless Network system planning has been completed
for over 30 percent of DOJ wireless users, and is now moving to the
implementation stage.
The EF Johnson Company provides wireless communications systems solutions
for public safety, commercial, and government customers. The company designs,
manufactures, and markets conventional and trunked radio systems, land mobile
radio repeaters and mobile and portable radios, including Project 25 digital
radio products. EF Johnson is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transcrypt
International, Inc.
Transcrypt International, Inc. ( www.transcrypt.com ) designs,
manufacturers and markets trunked and conventional radio systems, stationary
land mobile radio transmitters and receivers, including mobile and portable
radios, and manufactures information security products that prevent the
unauthorized interception of sensitive voice and data communication.
