[Scan-DC] Homepatrol Question

Steve,

The HP can be updated by connecting it to your PC with a standard USB cable,
and running the supplied Sentinel software. It's very easy and quick. I plug
mine in about once a month. Uniden updates the database on a weekly basis.

There is no comparison between updating/programming the HP and
updating/programming other scanners. The HP is a gift from the scanner gods
for those of us who don't have the time to spend hours setting up systems,
talk groups, etc., etc.

As I've mentioned in the past, this convenience comes at a price -- you
can't really program your own systems and banks into the HP (although
third-party software does provide some of this functionality if you really
want it). But it in the end, if I gauge the HP by how much action I get to
listen to, whether at home or when traveling, there's really no comparison.

Downsides of the HP: it's bigger and bulkier than a handheld scanner, and it
uses the evil SMA antenna connector.

Some empirical data on the HP build quality: mine did a face plant from the
top of my dresser directly onto a wooden floor. The battery compartment
cover popped off and a couple of the batteries were ejected, but the scanner
survived with no damage.

GRE is coming out with a similar type of scanner.

Cheers,
Andy

Subject: [Scan-DC] Homepatrol Question

I currently own a PRO-197 and enjoy using it. It seems sensitive and
decodes P25 signals very well. My problem is that I'm not really into
the programming end of it so I use what came with it and also set it
on scan when things are quiet. I know the database info that's in it
will slowly become outdated and I have no desire to start updating on
a regular basis, considering that I will have to use the RR database
and intermediary software to do it.

Can anyone comment on any issues updating the Homepatrol and how it
compares to the PRO-197 operationally?

Thanks.

Steve
