At least three of us on this list have HP-1s. Your assessment is right on. RadioReference.com and homepatrol.com both have forums dedicated to the radio. 

I understand that GRE is coming out with a similar type of radio. 

I've owned maybe 20 scanners of all types over the last 20 years, and for listening to action, nothing comes close to the HP-1.
