Not really that uncommon. Some air bags mounted on the top off the dash will break the windshield- especially if there is a GPS, EZ-Pass or scanner sitting on the dash.

While out on my bicycle, I happened upon the scene of a two-car collision a few weeks ago. The car that was worse off had both driver and passenger airbags. I think that's required now, right? At any rate, I could see that both bags in that car had deployed, but the windshield on the passenger side had still been shattered by some impact from within. I pointed out the disparity to one of the Alexandria PD officers on the scene, but he didn't seem to think that of significance.

Thanks DK. It was very unnerving. I knew she was in shock. To bad she seemed like a nice girl. He was a jerk. He showed no concern for her at all. His air bag went off, but hers was not visible, so either it did not deploy, or it did and I could not see it. the car was totaled. I actually heard the car racing up Old Baltimore Road and I thought here we go again, and then brakes, next impact.
