[Scan-DC] Other alternatives - RE: Programming Cable for 296D

Rick,

Sorry, I think I figured out what you mean. If you don't have a serial
port on your computer, you could then connect your newly-made serial
cable for the 296 to a serial-to-USB adapter and use a USB port on your
computer. I was being dense. Happens all the time.

Andy

I'm not an expert, but I think that's not right. All you do, according
to the instructions, is chop off the USB connector and replace it with a
serial connector (making sure you get the right wires connected to the
right pins of the connector). No USB converter is or should be used, at
least that's how I am reading the instructions.

Andy

Hi,

My intent is that you will need *both* the alternative cable, and a USB
convertor.

R.

Based on the directions to physically chop off the USB connector and
replace
with a serial connector, this is not the same thing as using a USB to
serial
adapter. The former is purely mechanical, the latter actually involves
translating the USB protocol to the serial protocol. Bottom line is I
don't
think using a USB-to-serial adapter would work. Instead, you must do the
mechanical replacement of the USB connector with a serial connector.
