Thanks Michael! For a little while, I thought I was going crazy (or, actually, crazier -- the voices in my head haven't usually involved scanner traffic).
Sounds like the trooper violated a few rules (if not laws). Glad he's OK.

okay, now this gets interesting - I checked the local newspaper there and lo and behold, its on the front page of the Fauquier Times Democrat newspaper Sept 8 edition.

unfortunately, the actual paper/story is only available with a subscription - but I called and the paper was very kind to send me a copy of the article:
---------------
Va. state trooper injured chasing after motorcycle
BY ALEXANDRA BOGDANOVIC
Times-Democrat Staff Writer
State Trooper Chris Carson emerged
from a Friday afternoon crash with only minor injuries. First Sgt. Jeff
Lail, in charge of the Area 12 Office in Warrenton, said the crash
happened on Brent Town Road near the Stafford County line around 5:40
p.m. Carson was trying to catch up with a motorcyclist who was allegedly
speeding and driving erratically, but the trooper never actually
advised dispatchers he was involved in a pursuit, Lail said. A pack of
cars pulled as far off the road as they could to get out of the
trooper’s way. Carson tried to get around the group, but couldn’t
complete the maneuver due to traffic coming in the opposite direction,
Lail said. Carson’s cruiser never crossed the center line, the first
sergeant stressed. Somehow, the back end of the trooper’s vehicle went
off the right side of the road. The cruiser then went back across both
lanes and hit a ditch bank and a tree, Lail said. Carson was transported
to Fauquier Hospital where he was treated and released.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Charlie
Crummett conducted the investigation into Carson’s involvement in the
crash. Crummett was unavailable Tuesday afternoon to say how fast Carson
was going or why he was not charged in connection with the incident.
The motorcyclist continued for about
two miles when he lost control of the bike for an unknown reason and
hit a VDOT sign, Lail said. The driver allegedly fled the scene on foot.
Fauquier County deputies came to the
scene to help look for the motorcyclist, Lail said. They apprehended
him at an area residence.
The driver, identified as Joshua Payne, 32, was also transported to the hospital for evaluation of his
injuries, Lail said.
Troopers charged him with numerous
violations including reckless driving/failure to maintain control;
driving without insurance; no state inspection; driving without a
motorcycle endorsement on his license; and improper registration.
Additional charges are pending.

still, interesting that the VSP manager of public relations didnt know about it since the trooper was transported to a hospital.......I will see what her response is to this.
