NOAA your weather
Coast Guard, NOAA set buoy to gather weather data

BALTIMORE - The Coast Guard along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration placed the eighth buoy in the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System in the Potomac River south of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge near National Harbor, Md., Friday.

Weather buoys collect data and report real-time environmental information including wind speed, temperature and wave height. The buoys also serve as interpretive buoys that mark the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historical Trail that runs throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sledge, a 75-foot construction tender homeported in Baltimore, served as the platform to assist NOAA in setting the weather buoy into the Potomac River.
