according to the WPssst:

Cracked rail on Red Line -- again

3:15 P.M. UPDATE: This is the fourth cracked
rail reported in the Metro system since April 1. A cracked rail was
discovered Thursday on the outband track near Takoma Station. Another
was discovered near Woodley Park in the direction of Glenmont on
Wednesday. On April 1, a cracked rail was discovered near Takoma in a
different location.

Metro spokesman Taubenkibel said Thursday that the cracks might be
due to the recent warm weather, but the exact cause can't be determined
until the rails are examined. "It could be routine wear and tear," he
said Thursday.

In January, the agency discovered a cracked rail outside the Forest
Glen Metro station in the direction of Shady Grove.

3:10 P.M. UPDATE:Just as we were about to sound the
all clear for Red Line riders, a report of a cracked rail on the
outbound track between Medical Center and Grosvenor stations comes in.
there is a 15-mph speed restriction in place.

2:40 P.M. UPDATE: Metro says the situation has been
resolved, but delays continue in both directions.

2:20 P.M. UPDATE: Taubenkibel said crews have
determined the fire is coming from a communications cable attached to a
track circuit between the rails.

2:12 P.M. UPDATE: A brush fire broke out at about
1:30 p.m. near the tracks between Shady Grove and Rockville Stations,
forcing Metro to run trains on single tracks in that area, according to
Metro spokesman Steve Taubenkibel. He said fire department personnel are
on the scene and once the fire is under control Metro will resume
normal service in the area.

Original post: Metro reports trains are
single-tracking between Shady Grove and Twinbrook due to a report of a
fire on the tracks at Rockville.

Earlier Thursday, a fire
on the tracks at Metro Center caused delays throughout the morning
for travelers on the Red Line. That fire was caused according to a short
 circuit, Metro officials said.
