A house in Great Falls, VA burned down tonight because Fairfax County FD couldn't make it to the house. Hilly, untreated road. Them having to search for a hydrant could be the valuable minutes that make the difference.

Subject: [Scan-DC] Dig out your fire hydrants!
As you dig out from the snow, make sure that the snow is cleared away
from nearby fire hydrants... could save valuable time in case of a
fire... especially with the increased danger of fire from the use of
candles during power outages.
Power here went out last night for 3 hours, and I was scared spitless because some of the dummies here were using candles... and many of my neighbors shouldn't be out in public unescorted anyway... there's never been a significant working fire in this development but if one ever got going, 16 townhouses would be well off before the FD could get here anyway, even in ideal conditions (we are exactly the same distance, 3-3/4 miles, from the three nearest fire stations.)
So, the few minutes that it would take the FD to locate and dig out the fire hydrants could well be critical!!
