When I was a volunteer at Kensington Company #5 many years ago, a gud portion of fires were due to poor maintance of chimneys - home owners would burn both real and artificial wood and never clean out the flu -
from the chimneys sparks would jump to the 2nd & 3rd stories of a home and catch them on fire!!!
Everyone should have a happy and safe New Year!

Dunno about the numbers but it wouldn't surprise me. Guy I work with is a volunteer at Wheaton Rescue, he mentioned a statistic the other day about one in eight fires around xmas involving Xmas trees or decorations, or something... dang, I can't remember the exact quote... but I'd guess that fires might increase during the holidays because of decorations, candles, dry trees, things like that...
Of course, the one at your place was evidently a "drar far", which doesn't help to support my dissertation!
