D.C. agency buys massages for 40 employees
The District's Office of Unified Communications used its government-issued charge card to buy $900 worth of massages for its staff, an expense even Mayor Adrian Fenty deemed inappropriate.
The massages were charged to an OUC purchase card on Oct. 25 and listed under "Spas - Health & Beauty," according to monthly data provided by the Office of Contracting and Procurement. Sources say about 40 of the OUC's staff, including 911 call takers, were chosen to receive a massage based on the quality of their work. Nichole Jefferson, a D.C.-based massage therapist, was hired for the job.
Drivers rehired after cell phone violations
More than 30 MetroAccess workers fired for using cell phones while driving have been reinstated even though they were caught under Metro's new zero-tolerance policy for employees caught chatting or texting at the wheel.
Twenty-nine drivers and two mechanics were given their jobs back, with some picking up passengers as soon as they were rehired, according to their union. Another driver who had been caught texting was hired back to a job at the service's call center.
New transportation fines, fees leave many feeling pinched
Cash-strapped local governments are turning to fees and fines to help boost their bottom lines, but the extra costs are leaving residents feeling squeezed.
The District issued 14,371 more parking tickets in October than it did in September, according to city data. And the city wrote more than 36,000 more tickets in fiscal 2009 than the previous year, thanks partly to 30 new meter readers and to new cameras on street sweepers that take pictures of illegally parked cars.
