(1) That's what I suspected. The fact that you find them at CVS and Staples reinforced my suspicions. 
(2) I tried looking, but I never did find a TV shootout.

All should do 8VSB (over the air) DTV. Some might do QAM (cable) DTV as well.

I have a Haier 7" portable LCD TV with ATSC tuner.(1) The sensitivity is absolutely horrible. So, before buying a portable TV, I recommend checking the online reviews!(2)

The people who design the 20 mile FRS-GMRS radios should also make  
portable TVs. The range would be 500 miles!
