Lots of stores advertising cheap FRS/GMRS radios with 10, 12, 16, and  even 20 mile range. 

ACE Hardware has FRS radios for $5. Didn't check the (optimistic) range.

My vote for killer app of 2009 is the 7" portable LCD TV. Going for $100 or less at several places. Built-in ATSC tuner.
