A magazine has a spring device to feed the rounds, a clip does not.
M-1 thumb? Brings back my military school training. As soon as
the CLIP is loaded into the M-1, and pressure is released, the bolt
slides forward on a direct path for your thumb, and if contact was
made bringing out a string of obscenities.
Hence the suggestions to slide the bolt forward manually.
