[Scan-DC] Butel & 64 Bit Operating Systems

I asked my husband to describe his experience with Butel softward on a 64
bit system:

I have a BCD396T and use the Butel software. My primary PC is a Quad-core
AMD machine running 64-bit Vista. What I can say is that:

 * The Butel software seems to run fine under 64 bit.

However,

 * The driver for the Uniden USB-to-serial cable, which
is based on the Prolific pl2303 converter, is not such
a happy story. While I was able to download a driver
from Prolific's website, install it on the Vista
machine, and even ostensibly assign a COM port, I was
never able to get the Butel software to talk to it.

My solution to this problem, which I'm certain is not one that will work for
more than a few of you, was to use a machine running Ubuntu Linux to in turn
run a copy of Windows XP within the (free) Virtualbox PC emulator.
Clearly I could have installed WinXP on the machine itself, but I had the
Ubuntu Linux machine around. Note that I did first try running WinXP under
Virtualbox on the Vista machine, but that didn't work either -- for some
reason the COM port emulation worked better under Linux.

It is possible that if you have a real serial port on your 64-bit Vista
machine, that you might be able to use that without all these difficulties.
I didn't, though, so I was forced to use the USB converter cable.

FWIW, YMMV.

Subject: [Scan-DC] Butel & 64 Bit Operating Systems

Hello:

My XP Pro desktop is dying. When looking at replacements, everything is
going to 64-bit operating systems. Even dual-core processors are to moving
to 64 bit motherboards.

Does anyone have any "intel" on getting Butel software to work on a 64 bit
version of Vista or Windows 7?

Regards,
Charles Watson
