[Scan-DC] USA Mobility public safety paging on 72.72 MHz

Thanks Ren. I should monitor 929.5125 simultaneously with 72.72 and see whether the latter could be a cross-link for the former. Although, I'm not sure if I could stand two radios both blasting pager squawks...

Thanks for the info!

Andy

  Andy,

USA Mobility is the old Metrocall paging company. They do provide paging to all the local counties for public safety but the frequency they use is 929.5125 (off the pager on my belt). Not sure what the 72.72 is used for but it would not be for the Alpha Elite pagers that we carry on our belts.

This makes sense, but it's interesting that the link sounds just like the
pager broadcasts themselves. You would think the link would just be a data
connection to the actual pager site. But perhaps the pager transmitter just
literally re-broadcasts what comes across the link, like your WV SP.

I'm still amazed that there are so many pagers on the air at all, with cell
phones, Blackberrys, and text messaging everywhere.

    Cheers,
    Andy

More than likely used as link between sites. I don't believe there are
    pagers on the mid-band frequencies.

This is what WV State Police do/did. I used to listen to the 72 MHz link
frequencies to here both the officer and the dispatcher since the SP didn't
    repeat.

This evening I was touring around parts of the radio spectrum that I don't
normally venture in. I came across several pager systems operating in the
72 - 73 MHz band, between TV channels 4 and 5. One particularly strong (and
active) signal received here in Arlington is on 72.72 MHz, which according
to the ULS is registered to USA Mobility (WNVV216) from a site in DC, and
the channel is assigned under the conventional public safety pool. But, the
authorization is under Part 90.35a of the FCC's rules, which applies only to
commercial operators. A quick look at the company's web site shows that they
provide paging and data service to virtually anyone for any reason (that is,
I couldn't really pin down exactly what their main business is). Their
    corporate HQ is in Alexandria.

Anyway, do any of you first responders know if this is a public safety
paging channel? Does USA Mobility provide pager service to local public
safety folks? Just curious if anyone knows specifically about this company
and their possible public safety operations. Maybe someone on this list
    works for them?

    Cheers,
    Andy
