I'm sure I don't want to be the trauma patient going by ground in heavy
traffic when the nearest trauma center is on bypass. I observe that
accidents and bad traffic tend to happen at the same time (I mean traffic
accidents, the kind with the highest risk for me, I realize other types of
accidents, shootings, etc. have different occurrence patterns). Two people
close to me have been taken to trauma centers, one to Baltimore Shock trauma
by helicopter from Carrol County, the other by ground to Suburban from
Gaithersburg. Good guidelines on when to transport each way are important,
but I don't think getting rid of helicopter service makes sense.

The same arguments have recently played out in Maryland.
Basically a bureaucracy/empire runs the MD medevac service.
They want to expand their empire. It means job security and higher pay
grades as an end result. They had their own lobbyists for the state
legislature.
They wanted several new helicopters but the legislature has stepped in.
Remember the goal of government is to grow.
Bob
