As i recall it was near Rt 1 South just north of the beltway. There
was a discount boat supply I used to frequent. nearby was a school
with a chain link fence around the yard. The sensor was in a small
area, also enclosed by chain link, in a corner of that yard. I think
it was visible from the parking lot of the boating store, but maybe
from a nearby side street.
It was simply a pole mounted anemometer which had a link to DCA tower.
Wind speed and direction from all sensor sites were compared to on
field velocity and direction. Software generated an alarm to the tower
controller if a fast moving front or outflow from a thunderstorm
caused a large variation between speed and/or velocity. Many other
phenomona can cause windshear but not be detected by this system.
Nowadays Doppler RADAR is the most effective means of detecting
windshear along with pilot reports. 73, Bob K3RSJ
