Stafford County Opens New Fire "House"
By Lieutenant Mark Stone
November 24, 2008
With considerable flexibility, ingenuity and partnering, Stafford
County began running a Paramedic Engine Company from leased property
at 53 Shelton Shop Road in the Garrisonville area on Wednesday,
November 26, 2008.
Capitalizing on the diligent aide and assistance of county and
department staff, contractors and property owners, the new station
went from concept to being operational in approximately 30 days. From
donated labor and supplies to long hours of planning and
implementation, the combined efforts of many made the station a
reality.
In part to meet requirements associated with the Insurance Services
Office (ISO) ratings, which evaluate fire and rescue departments
staffing and response capabilities, the new facility is anticipated to
bring more rapid fire and advanced life support care to an
ever-increasing populated region of the county.
Additionally, as one of several areas in the county that see a
consistantly high volume of 911 calls, it is anticipated that the busy
crews from Aquia Station 9 will immediately realize the impact of
having the newly staffed station strategically located. The
combination of decreased call volume and a compressed "first due"
response area will allow Aquia units to remain geographically
available a higher percentage of the time.
"It's exciting that we're accomplishing the goal," said Fire Chief Rob
Brown. "But it's disheartening to move personnel out of an existing
fire station that has been so open and welcoming to our career crew.
It's not the best-case scenario, but it was the best we could do under
the circumstances."
In these tough economic times, the fire department, more than ever,
will continue to strive for the best service delivery possible for the
community as a whole. While efforts and initiatives to increase
staffing and encourage volunteerism will remain a high priority,
creative solutions such as Station 14 will continue to be part of the
strategic planning process as well.
