[Scan-DC] FCPD Citizen Police Academy

I took the Arlington County Citizen's Police Academy. It was excellent -- 11
sessions of 3+ hours each, covering virtually all topics. Lots of demos. We
were taught the proper procedure for handcuffing a suspect, and we paired up
and practiced on other students. We had an evening of demonstrations of
drug- and explosives-sniffing dogs. One class was on gangs (totally
frightening). We toured the Arlington EOC. One class was dedicated to
traffic enforcement, and another class dedicated to hostage stand-offs
(including a hair-raising audio tape of an actual raid that did not end well
for the suspect). One class was about firearms (both those used by police,
and the laws governing possession and use by citizens).

If you are the sensitive type, the class may not be for you, because the
topics often included nitty-gritty not-for-prime-time details that some may
find offensive. Also, we had to submit to a criminal background check before
being accepted.

I followed up the class with an evening as a ride-along with a great
Arlington County officer.

It was lots of fun and extremely educational. I highly recommend it.

Happy new year,
Andy
